What Does Carbon Neutral Delivery Actually Mean?
A Term That's Everywhere - But What Does It Actually Mean?
Carbon neutral has become one of the most commonly used phrases in modern business. Companies across every sector are claiming the status, and buyers - particularly procurement managers - are rightly asking what it actually means in practice. For The Fruit People, carbon neutrality isn't a marketing label. It's the result of deliberate, measurable action taken since 2021.
Understanding Carbon Neutrality
At its core, carbon neutrality means that the total amount of carbon dioxide (and equivalent greenhouse gases) emitted by a business is balanced by an equal amount removed from or prevented from entering the atmosphere. Achieving it typically involves two parallel tracks: first, reducing emissions wherever possible; and second, offsetting the remaining emissions that can't yet be eliminated.
For a food delivery business like ours, the most significant sources of emissions are vehicle fuel, refrigeration, and packaging. Addressing these requires a combination of operational changes and investment in verified offset programmes.
What The Fruit People Actually Does
Since 2021, The Fruit People has saved 2.9 tonnes of CO2 emissions by converting food surplus into biofuel rather than sending it to landfill - where decomposing organic matter produces methane, a greenhouse gas roughly 80 times more potent than CO2 over a 20-year period. Our packaging is designed with recyclable materials in mind, and we continue to review and reduce waste at every stage of our supply chain.
We've also planted 1,200 trees in County Roscommon as part of our ongoing reforestation commitment. Trees are one of nature's most effective carbon capture mechanisms, and planting them in Ireland supports both climate goals and local biodiversity.
EcoVadis Bronze Certification
To ensure our sustainability claims are independently verified, The Fruit People holds an EcoVadis Bronze certification. EcoVadis is a globally recognised third-party sustainability rating platform used by major corporations to assess the environmental and ethical performance of their suppliers. A Bronze rating signals that we meet recognised sustainability criteria across environmental management, labour practices, and ethical business conduct - giving our clients confidence that our green commitments are real, not performative.
Why It Matters for Your Business
More and more Irish companies are now required - either by regulation, investor expectation, or client tender criteria - to demonstrate that their supply chain meets sustainability standards. Choosing a carbon neutral, EcoVadis-certified supplier like The Fruit People is one straightforward way to strengthen your own sustainability reporting. It's a small decision with a genuine positive impact.
